Original Source Mountain Mayhem 2010 bucked the trend of recent years and provided glorious weather for the entire race. The course was extremely tough on what seemed like endless climbing interlinked with tight winding singletrack. But this only made the racing and riding more exciting. The start of the race is something not matched at other events the sheer number of people in a bun fight to get across the line is staggering, after a short run to spread the field grabbing at bikes ensues to get the real race in the saddle under way.
The pace was furious up front and the field quickly spread with the Scott Expert team headed by Nick Craig out in front. They sprinted to a massive total of 31 laps taking the top step of the podium again. In the Solo category Ant White rode to victory, a lap ahead of second, making the course seem easy. Well done to those who took on the Mayhem course single-handedly, it was punishing and the lap times were outstanding.
Ant White talks about the new prototype Exposure Lights in his latest race report "As night fell I was lucky enough to be trying out some prototype lights from Exposure. The 1800 Lumen “SixPack” and 900 Lumen Diablo Mk.2. I ran the Diablo on the mid setting pretty much all night and flicked between settings on the 6 pack depending on the terrain. It was a joy to ride and got me through to dawn in good spirits, something I usually use music to achieve but couldn’t this year because of the BCF ipod ban. didn't feel any weight etc issues with it on the bars and the combination of beams seemed perfect. The Diablo on the mid setting had a really clear crisp beam and for much of the course and in combination I really didn't need more than the 6pack on the red/3rd setting ... although it was great fun and really clear through the twisty singletrack on the top and mid settings. Carl was impressed and could spot me from along way coming into the arena."
The USE team took everything in their stride consistently lapping at a pace that didn’t really represent the training that had gone on in the months preceding the event. But the banter around the course made up for the slight lack of speed. There were a number of teams and riders sponsored by USE Exposure Lights and they performed extremely well, the Raleigh, WXC Teams and Trevor Allen (Ergon 24 Hour Racing team) to name a few.
Congratulations to the competitors who didn’t show any signs of slowing throughout the night. And a big thank you to all the riders in the hand over point that made the night laps so enjoyable with the cheering and shouting at passing riders.
Time now to put up the feet for a little well earned rest before getting the bike back out for the crucial training to better the lap times next year.
