England-Wales-England, a 1300mile unsupported race across England and Wales. You know it’s tough when only 3 people enter!
Those 3 brave souls were Aiden Harding, Rob Dean and Steve Heading. All 3 were equipped with Exposure Lights brand new Revo dynamo light.
Conditions weren’t ideal for a 1000 mile bike packing race. June saw record levels of rain fall which made for hard going. All 3 battled on through but ultimately the hard conditions and time constraints meant that none of the riders completed the whole distance. All 3 riders returned home heroes though and can consider themselves pioneers of UK multiday bike packing racing.
Here’s what they had to say:
Steve Heading:
“Having thoroughly tested the Exposure Revo dynamo lighting system on the EWE I can confirm that this is without doubt the way forward on multiday events. And tours. And winter riding. Infact, it's the way forward for anyone who rides a bike more than occasionally”
Rob Dean
“If I had to sum up EWE 2012 in one word it would be “brutal”. The combination of the extraordinary weather, coupled with the sections of the course that will, inevitably in the first edition, need refining for next year, made for a super tough experience. This was particularly true of the first 6 days, simply due to the relentlessness of the weather when here was torrential downpours on every day and the relentless sections of trail that were tough on both body and mind to keep pushing forward in a way appropriate to a race, not just a ride”
Aidan Harding
“Anticipating long pushes into the evening, we also all chose dynamo-powered lighting. SP-dynamo hubs looked a long way from what you see on the front of postman's bike or Dutch townie. The Exposure Revo light unit near-skipped out of your hand, it was so light. Combined, they were no penalty over a normal light battery setup, but we weren't tied to having to find a wall-socket. Perfect.
Massive thanks to USE/Exposure for their kit. Carbon flat bars and seatpost performed perfectly. I had them taped up for the race to protect them from rubbing bags, but since taking the tape off, they still look good. The Revo dynamo light was excellent. There's nothing close to it in terms of brightness and ease of use – no question of having to preserve your battery charge.”
